A unique approach to telephoto zoom design.
Packed with technology
With its multi-layer Diffractive Optical (DO) element, Image Stabilization (IS) and Ultra-Sonic Motor (USM) technologies, the EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM is a celebration of precision lens design.
Diffractive Optical (DO) optics
The EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM incorporates a Diffractive Optical (DO) element, which reduces the physical size of the lens while preserving image quality. The DO element combines the characteristics of fluorite and UD elements into one piece of glass. The result is high contrast and sharpness as well as tight control over chromatic aberration.
Image Stabilizer
The EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM features a three stop Image Stabilizer (IS), making this an ideal lens for handheld work. Shutter speeds up to three stops slower than normal can be used with no perceptible increase in image blur. Major movement in a particular direction is automatically interpreted as panning and IS is turned off in this plane.
Ultrasonic focusing
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting.
Pleasing background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm, which is controlled electromagnetically, gives out-of-focus regions a softer, more even feel, and lets in-focus subjects stand out against a blurred background.
Integrated into the EOS system
The AF drive pattern of the lens is tailored to specifically match that of the latest EOS range, extracting maximum benefit from the lens’ speed advantage. The lens ensures optimal flash metering by passing distance information back to a compatible EOS camera's E-TTL II flash system.
In harmony with the environment
In keeping with Canon’s stringent environmental policy, only lead-free glass is used in the lens’ optics.
